Gameplay
The game features a one or two player mode but two player cannot be played simultaneously, each player takes turns and receives a seperate score. A player starts with three planes or "lives" and additional planes can be earned at the 20,000 point mark, 80,000 point mark, and for each additional 80,000 points.
1942 has a vertically scrolling overview which was typical of shooters during the time it was released. The player could move freely left and right but had limited movement forward and back because the scrolling moves at a standard pace at all times. The object of the game is to shoot down enemy planes using the games unlimited ammo and moving using the directional pad or using the roll ability to avoid enemy fire, roll can only be used three times per plane.
